I am passionate about education. Prior to moving to Murphys, I was elected to my eldest son's local school board and served from 1998-2002. During my term, I dedicated my service to improve student achievement, attract and retain the best teachers, enhance athletic, music and art programs, and provide early childhood and family support initiatives. I strived to equalize educational opportunities among the different parts of the community. As a VUSD school board member, I will focus on these same issues here, while working hard to responsibly manage the budget.

I also believe that it is important to openly engage the parents and school community in honest, straightforward dialogue about current issues facing the school district.

The quality of life in Calaveras County is excellent and provides the perfect setting for my wife and I to raise our two young boys. My wife grew up in Arnold and attended Hazel Fischer and Bret Harte. Her education led her to pursue an advanced degree and a successful career. I want these same opportunities for all of our children, and therefore have a long term educational investment and commitment to the Vallecito Union School District.

Susan Singleton

I was an Army Brat growing up, attending eight different schools through the years before I graduated from high school in San Francisco. My bachelor’s degree was in English from the University of California at Berkeley.  I then received my California Teaching Credential for K-8 from California State University Hayward in the specialized inner city program. I began teaching in Oakland, California, but my first fulltime teaching job was in Tasmania, Australia.

Our family moved to Calaveras County thirty years ago, in 1986. My children attended Vallecito Union School District Schools and all three graduated from Bret Harte High School.

I retired from teaching in June 2016, after serving 20 years in the Vallecito Union School District.  During my years at VUSD, I taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at both Hazel Fischer Elementary and Albert Michelson Elementary. As a staff member, I helped introduce several new curriculums, technological developments, and social programs. We made every effort to make the learning experience for the children as rewarding as possible.  What a joy it has been to see our students return to visit as accomplished young adults.

I look forward to serving my community and schools as a school board member and feel that because of my experience in education, I have unique insight into the needs of the children. I hope to continue the quality education Vallecito provides and make a positive difference in the future of our children.

Sarah Wilson

Sarah Wilson is fourth generation in Calaveras County, attending school in the Vallecito Union School District and graduating from Bret Harte High School.

Mrs. Wilson has a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication from California State University Sacramento, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.  While attending school, she joined AmeriCorps in which she volunteered at the local elementary schools, coordinated local clothing drives that benefited a local non-profit WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment), and arranged a workshop for local high school students in order to educate students and teen mothers of the benefits of attending college.

Mrs. Wilson accepted an internship with the California State Department of Consumer Affairs where she worked on various projects from analyzing legislation to assisting on conferences that discussed elder abuse to cyber safety for children.

Following graduation, Mrs. Wilson took a position at the California State Department of Consumer Affairs as the Director’s Administrative Assistant.  There she continued to assist the Department in coordinating conferences and facilitating in Strategic Planning Sessions for the Department's Boards and Bureaus.

After several years working for the State, Mrs. Wilson and her husband Kyle decided to move back to Murphys, to work in the family business and raise their two boys.

As a parent, active member of the community, and now as a member of the Board of Trustees, Ms. Wilson is committed to ensuring the district has what it needs to deliver a superior education to the children of VUSD.
